One of the world's most fearsome wooden roller coasters, Son of Beast, can be found at King's Island, but possibly not for much longer. Despite its hype, the coaster has suffered difficulties and challenges since it first opened.

Daddy: The Beast
King's Island theme park has a history of outstanding wooden roller coasters that began in 1979 when the Beast opened. This terrain coaster is largely hidden from view but reveals surprising thrills along its 7,359 foot track, including three separate tunnels and a strong 540 degree helix known as the "lair." Reaching speeds up to 65 miles per hour and lasting longer than four minutes, the Beast is regularly recognized as one of the finest and most popular wooden coasters in the world, despite being over 30 years old. Today, the Beast is still the longest wooden roller coaster in the world, and it ranks in the top 10 wooden coasters for top speed and biggest drop.

Аbout Son of Beast
King's Island hoped to continue the park's reputation of outstanding wooden roller coasters when Son of Beast, the largest single investment in the park's history to that point, opened in 2000 with tremendous fanfare. Building on the heritage of its namesake parent, this new coaster was the tallest and fastest wooden coaster in the world when it debuted, and its 7,032 foot length was second only to the Beast. With a top speed of 79 miles per hour, the coaster pulled up to 4.5 times the force of gravity during a two minute, twenty second ride, extreme forces that would prove too costly for the ride and its riders.

As a more visible coaster than its terrain parent, Son of Beast dominated the King's Island skyline. Built of southern yellow pine and Douglas fir, the coaster's heavy structure across the two first hills was an immense beacon to coaster lovers eager to ride what was hoped to be an even better ride than the Beast, but the legacy would be short-lived.

The Loop
Son of Beast had one unique feature that set it apart from any other wooden roller coaster in the world: a 118 foot tall vertical loop, the only such loop on any wooden coaster. While the coaster's structure was metal, the loop was steel and designed in such a way that the coaster's trains could glide effortlessly into the inversion. This unique element generated tremendous interest in the ride from the roller coaster community and the amusement park industry, and for years that loop - curving so incongruously from a wooden structure - would immediately draw the eye to the coaster King's Island hoped would thrill generations of riders.

Trouble in the Family
Unfortunately, the continuing legacy of the Beast was not to be, and Son of Beast was plagued with difficulties from the time it opened. Even experienced coaster fanatics registered complaints about the ride's painful roughness, and many injury reports were logged even if they were eventually dismissed. Several stronger injury reports haunted the ride, including an incident in July 2006 when one of the coaster's support beams cracked because of the weight of the train, causing a severe jolt that injured 27 riders.

Will the coaster reopen or be demolished?
After that incident, the ride was closed for a year and when it reopened in July 2007, it did so without the vertical loop. Removing the loop allowed lighter trains to be used on the ride and helped lower stress on the structure and unnecessary force on the riders. Still, complaints about the ride persisted, and even though the ride was certified as operating safely and appropriately by inspectors from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, after yet another complaint in June 2009, the coaster was once again closed.

The Coaster's Future
The future is an unclear one for Son of Beast, and as of the end of the 2009 season the coaster remains standing but not operating, a gloomy reminder that taller, faster, and more innovative coasters aren't always successful. Rumors abound that the ride will be demolished, but no judgment has yet been passed on its fate. Instead, it stands in silence, having thrilled more than 7 million riders, but possibly unable to offer those thrills any longer.

The Beast: Kings Island

The Beast is a wooden roller coaster located at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio. It is the longest wooden roller coaster in the world, sprawling over 35 acres (14 ha), and was one of the fastest and tallest roller coasters ever built when it opened in the spring of 1979.
The Beast has been constantly rated as one of the top roller coasters in the world since it first opened, having earned itself a cult-like following among coaster enthusiasts. Even after more than 30 years, it is still one of the main attractions at Kings Island, located at the rear of the park in the Rivertown section. To date[when?], over 40 million riders have ridden The Beast.
It has been incorrectly reported by some sources[who?] that the Philadelphia Toboggan Company was involved in the construction of this coaster. This is thought to be true because the trains are the same as the Racer which the Philadelphia Toboggan Company constructed, but for The Beast they were responsible only for the trains. Construction was handled internally by Kings Island's Maintenance & Construction department.
Charlie Dinn, who spearheaded the park's maintenance and construction team, oversaw the vertical construction of The Beast. Dinn later left Kings Island and formed his own construction firm, which later went bankrupt and re-organized as Custom Coasters International, which also went bankrupt in 2002.
While Kings Island was owned by Taft Broadcasting, the design and engineering was largely subcontracted to Curtis D. Summers Engineering, which was a structural engineering and architecture firm located in Cincinnati. Summers' team worked with Taft staff designers Al Collins and Jeffrey Gramke to design the Beast with John Allen providing profiling and dynamics specifications; Taft was unique in having constructed most of their wood coasters at Kings Island, Kings Dominion, Carowinds, and Canada's Wonderland during the 1970s and into the 1980s. Following KECO's sale of their theme parks to Paramount in 1992, Summers continued to partner with Charlie Dinn's firm on several coasters at parks around North America. The two firms continued to work together on coasters up until Summer's death in 1992.

Ride Layout
The ride begins with a 180-degree turn out of the station, leading though the switch track (used for storing trains on the storage track) and onto the first lift hill. The train slowly climbs the 110-foot (34 m) hill and once it crests, drops 135 feet (41 m) into an underground tunnel, passing the on-ride camera on the way.


The train comes out of the first drop still underground. Out of the tunnel, the train makes a hard left-hand turn, maneuvers the climb and drop of a second hill giving riders momentary weightlessness. The train then climbs upward, makes a right turn, and speeds into a covered brake shed. Once through the trim brakes, the track turns to the right, continuing through a heavily wooded area. Veering left, the coaster enters the second tunnel. A quarter of this tunnel is underground, while the exit is above. This is due to the topography of the land. As the train exits the tunnel, the coaster gains speed veering right then taking another hard turn to the right. It is at this point on the coaster that riders may feel remote from the rest of the park. At the end of this run, the train begins to climb the second lift hill. At the top of this lift, the train turns left and begins a gradual, 18-degree drop. The drop itself measures 141 feet (43 m) from the crest of the lift hill to the lowest point of the helix. As the train descends, the track starts to bank left in preparation for entrance into the final helix. The highly banked, high speed, counter clockwise helix is the signature trademark of the ride and is one of the most memorable and intense finales of any roller coaster in the world.[weasel words] Half of this massive double helix is enclosed, which adds to the intensity and excitement. Once through this element, the train crests another small hill, then rises into the final smooth magnetic brake run back to the station.

History
Originally, the park wanted to re-build a replica of the "Shooting Star" roller coaster previously located at Cincinnati's Coney Island. Cincinnati's Coney Island was the predecessor to Kings Island and the Shooting Star was immensely popular at the park until the ride was demolished in 1971. The original idea to rebuild the Shooting Star was back-burnered in favor of a terrain coaster utilizing the park's natural wooded hills. The Shooting Star was indeed rebuilt, but not at Kings Island. A replica was constructed at Canada's Wonderland called the Mighty Canadian Minebuster.
The Beast became and still is the world's longest wooden roller coaster when it opened on Friday, April 13, 1979 and is credited as the first modern-day wooden coaster to generate a marketing campaign. From elaborate animated commercials to countless television spots, the ride became famous worldwide. Because so many people have heard about The Beast, it is one of the most well-known roller coasters in the world.
When it opened, The Beast featured three underground tunnels. By its second season the second and third underground tunnels had been enclosed into one long one so that an access road could be built. Also after its first season, an enclosed tunnel structure was built over the final helix.
In 2000, the park opened the Son of Beast, a "sequel". Son of Beast is the tallest, fastest, and until 2006 was the only looping wooden coaster in the world. The loop was removed after the 2006 season for maintenance reasons following an accident. It is also the second longest wooden roller coaster, designed so that The Beast retains its longest wooden roller coaster record.
In popular culture, R. L. Stine wrote a novel which featured the roller coaster and was named after it, simply titled The Beast. The book also had a sequel called The Beast 2.
The 2009 season was the coaster's 30th year running since its opening. With Diamondback built, the entrance is back where it used to be in 1979. As an observation, most of the track and supports have been replaced in the double helix creating a smoother ride.

The Pipeline Coaster


The Pipeline Coaster (also known as a "Heartline Twister Coaster") was a roller coaster developed by Japanese ride company TOGO. Pipeline roller coasters position riders between the rails, rather than above or below. TOGO was the first and only company to produce this type of roller coaster successfully. Although Utah's Arrow Dynamics and Switzerland's Intamin AG developed these types of coasters as well, they didn't catch on. Some of the drawbacks of these coasters included the need for large, uncomfortable over-the-shoulder restraints as well as poor wheel-to-track construction. Only five pipeline coasters operate today.

History
TOGO developed the first Pipeline coaster and the first recorded Ultratwister coaster built was in 1985 at LaQua amusement park in Tokyo, Japan called Ultra Twister. The ride became somewhat popular in Japanese parks, and one year after the first was built, Six Flags purchased one of these coasters for their Six Flags Great Adventure theme park, where it resided until 1990 when it was moved to Six Flags Astroworld until the park closed in 2005. This coaster would remain the only pipeline coaster in America. The American Ultratwister still exists, however it awaits possible future assembly at Six Flags America.
TOGO's model would be the only somewhat successful design. Six of these were made and were successful in small parks due to its small footprint. The ride inverts riders three times through three Heartline Roll elements and utilizes a special near-vertical lift hill. The lift hill would be prone to down time for maintenance and the Ultra Twister owned by Six Flags had its lift hill modified by Premier Rides to a less steep angle when it was moved to Six Flags Astroworld.
Throughout the early 1990s, Arrow Dynamics attempted to develop a pipeline roller coaster. Only one of these was built as a prototype at Arrow's facility in Utah. Plans for the coaster were scrapped altogether due to roughness and other factors. However, one was partially built at Alton Towers in the United Kingdom. In the early 1990s, John Wardley twice attempted to build one of these at the park. The second attempt was partially built, but then scrapped for the coaster Nemesis. The coaster was not completely finished due to Arrow's finance problems.
In the mid 1990s, Intamin AG built a spiral roller coaster in South Korea. Not much is known about the design, but only one of these coasters were built. The only Spiral Coaster ever built is currently located in Kuwait.

X-Six Flags


It's been dubbed the "most anticipated new ride of the decade" and the world's first "Xtreme Coaster", but until January 2002 no one knew for sure. Now the question is did X live up to all the hype?

In December 2000 Los Angeles based Six Flags Magic Mountain literally sent shockwaves through the industry when they announced a massive capital improvement package consisting of three roller coasters. It was by far the largest expansion at the park since its opening in 1971.

Six Flags Magic Mountain one of the leaders in the "thrill park industry" would be transformed from theme park to "Xtreme Park" with an impressive roller coaster collection totaling fifteen.

Debuting first would be Goliath Jr. "the new Giant among kid's coasters. Following would be Deja Vu, the next generation super boomerang roller coaster and tallest and fastest suspended looping coaster of its kind. And finally the park would introduce X, a cutting edge one-of-a-kind roller coaster designed to break all the rules.

The addition of three new roller coasters in one year would earn Six Flags Magic Mountain the title for having the most roller coasters in one park. A coveted title long held by Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

X is far different compared to the traditional roller coaster. For the first time ever riders are seated in prototype vehicles that spin independently 360-degrees forwards and backwards on a separate axis. The added spinning effect creates an unprecedented and never before "don't know what to expect next" sensation.

Initial reaction to X was almost disbelief. Had the ride designer gone insane?

"You've got to be kidding, that is one sick ride!" was heard stated to the company that came up with this wild prototype following the annoucement.

The company behind this prototype was Arrow Dynamics of Clearfield, Utah, a firm that has created some of the industry's best thrill rides. Arrow is known for its many firsts and got started in the industry when Walt Disney contracted them to build some early ride systems for Disneyland. Some of Arrow's notable projects include the first tubular tracked steel coaster, the Matterhorn at Disneyland and the world's first modern looping coaster, Corkscrew at Knott's Berry Farm. So it was really no surprise that Arrow was behind this impressive prototype.

How X came to be... One day, Gary Story, President of Six Flags visited Arrow's Utah office in search of a new thrill ride. Story, disappointed with what was presented was about leave when Alan Schilke, Arrow's Chief Engineer, presented a rough computer animation at the last moment for a ride he designed called Fourth Dimension.

Schilke's design had been stashed away in his desk after being criticized by colleagues for being too extreme, one that would make people sick and believed to be impossible to engineer. Story amazed with what he saw, decided to give Arrow the go ahead to develop a scale prototype inside their Utah hangar.

Everyone at Arrow and a handful from Six Flags came to the hangar to ride the scale prototype. The prototype turned out to be a hit and Six Flags gave the green light to move forward with the project.

According to Schilke the design for the Fourth Dimension is in part inspired from the Zipper, a classic carnival ride, found on the midway at many fairs. The Fourth Dimension Coaster is far more complicated than the carnival ride and Arrow's engineering team logged thousands of hours working on the design. Far more hours than the number required to design a skyscraper. After countless hours, the design for X was finally done and construction could begin.

The quest for amusement parks to build something bigger and better has been at its height in the past several years. But building restrictions are preventing many parks from going taller and faster, so the industry is looking to the designers to come up with new ideas. X is exactly that, a new idea, that really pushes the roller coaster to a new level.

So would X live up to the expectations of being the first Xtreme Coaster?

X is literally like no other. From the sidelines it may not appear as impressive as some of the other rides out there, but believe it or not X packs a powerful punch. It is just one of those rides you're going to have to experience for yourself to completely understand.

The first thing riders will notice about X are the monster-sized trains inside the station. The 20-foot wide, 70-foot long wing shaped vehicle seats 28 passengers, two abreast in fourteen individual cars, seven positioned on each side of the train.

The state-of-the art restraint system adjusts to each rider's size and safely secures the individual for the duration of the ride.

Leaving the station facing backwards, the train rounds a turn and begins its ascent up 190 feet, before reaching the crest of the lift hill. Traveling backwards riders get an impressive, sweeping view of Six Flags Magic Mountain, and are not afforded the comfort of seeing what's to come.

Reaching the apex your heart begins to skip beats as the train disengages from the lift and finally your off. A short drop into a dip is quickly followed by a maneuver that few will forget.

Before plunging off the near vertical first drop, the seats you're strapped in suddenly flip forward placing the rider in a position few will be comfortable with. Chills run up your spine, as you realize there is nothing between you and the ground below, as you hang into the restraint disoriented by this sudden surprise. Try not to loose focus now, as the train is about to fall off a steel cliff and drop like a brick.

The first drop is insane, descending 215 feet at a near vertical 88.5-degree angle, to reach a blazing speed of 76 mph. But get this, just as you reach full velocity, your seat completes that forward flip that you began 200 feet above!

Before you've got any clue about what just happened you're back in the upright position, soaring into the first, massive 185-foot Raven Turn. Fly birdie... FLY as the train gains altitude and soars through the turn placing the riders into flying position. Look down from eighteen stories, spread those arms out and fly... uh, maybe you should scream... SCREAM!

Descending out of the Raven Turn the seats rotate backwards as they descend into a valley in the track, but don't relax as the next surprise awaits. As the train rockets into a bunny hop, the seats do a complete back flip that is filled with beautiful airtime. This flip is a perfect floater, graceful and smooth.

So now you realize this ride filled with surprises... and you'd better believe it. The intensity never lets off as the train rounds a sweeping turn high above the station and dives into one of the best elements of the entire ride.

Try combing a half-twist, with a forward flip, while traveling at a furious pace and you get one radical maneuver. And as unbelievable as it seems X pulls off this feisty element in style, leaving you so disoriented that you literally cannot comprehend the second Raven Turn that almost immediately follows.

And guess what the ride is not over! With speed to burn the train soars through the second Raven Turn, this time on the outside of the track and ascends into the final maneuver, a back flip that concludes by sliding into the brake run.

If after your first ride you've got that all down, then there's got to be a metal waiting for you somewhere.

Now don't fret if your eyes well up with tears of joy, as your heart pumps adrenaline, no worries, your not alone. There's likely twenty-seven others right then sharing the same moment.

As the train stops and restraints pop free, you'll likely follow the thrill seeker instinct and run. Of course run back in line that is for a second ride.

So did X live up to the hype? You'd better believe it... it's AMAZING. Arrow and Six Flags deserve credit for taking the roller coaster to a new level. X has without a doubt raised the bar and is positioned in a class by itself, earning its distinction as the world's first "Xtreme Ride".

Honestly, words cannot describe the sensation or experience X delivers and do it any justice. X is quite simply a minute of steel mind games that tinker with your senses, delivering a disorienting experience of fear and joy all at once.

High-octane thrills at Knott's Berry Farm continue with Xcelerator, a 50s themed roller coaster that uses a hydraulic motor to launch riders to an electrifying top speed of 82 miles-per-hour in just 2.3 seconds. Seated in flame-emblazoned '57 Chevys, passengers will ascend up and then back down the outside of a 205-foot tall Top Hat element at a vertical, 90-degree angle. This short, but very intense roller coaster then flies through two overbanked turns before it screams into the final brake run covering 2,202 feet of steel track in just about one minute.

Those thrill-obsessed folks at Cedar Point (God bless 'em!) have been busy building an enormous project at their coaster haven since late summer, but kept it shroud in secrecy. While the rumors swirled to a fever pitch, the facts, which the park finally released in mid-January, were even wilder than the wildest rumor. Check out these tracks facts:

In 1978, the Point earned the "Guinness Book of World Records" distinction of having the tallest roller coaster with the 125-foot, 60-mph Gemini. (Hah! Wimpy by today's standards.) In 1989, they ignited the modern-day coaster wars and broke the 200-foot threshold with the 205-foot, 72 mph hypercoaster, Magnum XL-200. Only three years ago, the park marked the new era with the 310-foot, 93-mph Millennium Force "giga-coaster." Now, the park has developed a new coaster prefix, the "strata-coaster" to describe its 2003 entry into the record books, Top Thrill Dragster.


While Magnum and Millennium Force are more or less conventional coasters, save their incredible height and speeds, Top Thrill Dragster is a new breed of thrill machine. Most coasters use a lift hill chain to start the ride; at the top of the hill, gravity takes over and the momentum propels the trains through the ride and back to the station. Dragster will use a hydraulic launch system to rocket its trains out of the loading platform. Recently, coasters like Flight of Fear at Paramount's Kings Dominion and the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney-MGM Studios have used magnetic propulsion. While the concept is the same, the Point's new coaster will use a relatively new hydraulic launch system.


Instead of immediately going up a hill, the drag-racing themed trains will roar down a straightaway and reach an unprecedented speed of 120 mph in about 4 seconds. From there, they will ascend 90 degrees up a 420-foot hill, and then zoom straight down 400 feet of spiraling track at 90 degrees, again reaching an adrenaline-pumping 120 mph before they return to the station. With no agonizing "click-clack-click" up a lift hill, the whole experience will be over in a matter of seconds, but what an intense few seconds that should be!


When is a coaster NOT a coaster?
With Dragster's height of 420 feet and a top speed of 120 mph, Cedar Point will safely be able to reclaim the tallest/fastest titles for any roller coaster on the planet--for now. Parks love the bragging rights, and manufacturers are only too happy to build ever-taller and -faster thrill machines, so it's likely these unheard-of records will fall sooner, rather than later.


But Cedar Point is clinging to some dubious distinctions for its Dragster coaster. The park claims that it will be the first to ever break the 400-foot mark on a roller coaster. That's just not true--sort of. Back in 1997, Six Flags Magic Mountain debuted the 415-foot Superman: The Escape coaster. Cedar Point contends that since the California record-breaker doesn't complete a full circuit, it is not a true coaster.


"We consider (Superman) a thrill ride," says Bryan Edwards, spokesman for the Point. Like the Dragster coaster, the Magic Mountain ride uses a launch system to zoom out of the loading station. It races 90 degrees up a 415-foot hill, slows to a stop, and then plummets backwards, retracing the L-shaped track back to the station. Edwards and others claim Superman should more accurately be called a reverse freefall ride. "There is absolutely no debate that this is a coaster," Edwards says about Dragster. Regardless, Cedar Point will top the Six Flags ride by 5 feet.


Also, the Ohio park is saying that Dragster will bring its total to 16 coasters--no problem there--and will thereby offer more coasters than any other park. Woops. Six Flags Magic Mountain is introducing the floorless coaster, Scream, this season and says that will bring ITS arsenal to 16 coasters. Once again, Superman seems to be the bone of contention in the tally.


Here's my take on it: I don't really care what anyone calls the rides. Coaster and park fans should give thanks to both Cedar Point and Six Flags (and other parks) for their incredible scream machines--whatever they are classified. If bragging rights help to motivate parks to build new, record-shattering, heart-pounding, life-flashing-before-your-eyes rides, let 'em duke it out.

This coaster at Nagashima Spa Land Amusement Park in Mie prefecture, Japan, boasts the longest track length on the planet: a mighty 8,133 ft. (2,479 m). Because the Steel Dragon, named for the Chinese year of the dragon in 2000, was built in Japan, it required far more steel than other roller coasters because of the necessary earthquake protection, putting its cost at more than $50 million. So if you hear screams emanating from the park, it might not be not the people on the coaster but rather the Nagashima accountants.

This impressive steel monster called a "giga-coaster" by Cedar Point was the first full-circuit roller coaster to stand more than 300-feet tall, thus making it the tallest, fastest full-circuit roller coaster in the world at opening.
Designed and built by Intamin AG, Millennium Force has an "out and back" layout in an L-shape that begins with a 310-foot tall lift hill that parallels Lake Erie. This 6,595-foot long scream machine includes a 310-foot, 169-foot and 182-foot tall hills, a stomach stealing 300-foot drop at a near vertical 80 degree angle, two dark tunnels and three overbanked turns. Since its debut, Millennium Force has consistently been voted in polls the No. 1 steel roller coaster in the world. In its first six years, Millennium Force has thrilled more than 10 million riders.
